Digging Down

2026

Digging Down was a project in collaboration with In Cahootz, Rachel Mimiec and Viv Lee, developed through Glasgow Life’s Artists in Communities programme. It ran from March to May, with a final exhibition at Glasgow Art Space in June. Together with InCahootz Creative Citizen’s, we explored ceramics through foraging for wild clay and mindfully gathering natural materials. These shared experiences and processes shaped the works presented in the exhibition.

Digging Down explores the connections between nature, recovery and community resilience through the work of members of the Creative Citizens programme. Inspired by time spent outdoors, walking, observing, gathering and reflecting, the artists respond to the natural world through ceramics, photography and drawing. Through these works, they explore how engagement with nature can nurture wellbeing, creativity and a sense of belonging. Created through a series of creative workshops, the works in this exhibition reflect processes of making, reflection and discovery. The title Digging Down refers not only to the physical act of searching for clay, but also to the deeper journeys of creativity, recovery, resilience and growth that underpin the work.

In Cahootz was co-founded in 2010 by well-seasoned community arts workers, Kate Black and Phyllis Steel. They use the arts as the main tool to create a safe, nurturing, productive and creative environment, enabling them to put their core values into action. They aim to target and provide opportunities for marginalised people who have, for various reasons, found themselves excluded from society. The organisation’s ultimate aim is to achieve its vision of helping to build an empowered, creative and confident society.
